Bible Verses for Anxiety, Panic, and Depression

I posted these May 1, 2007 and would like to post them again to keep them current and easy to find. These verses changed my thought-life, my prayer-life, my relationship with God, gave me courage, and helped me see that my panic, depression, and anxiety were not stronger than my God! I read them daily and on anxious days I also read them just before bed. God's Word is alive and active and when spoken out loud--powerful. (Hebrews 4:12) Months after recording these verses, I started praying them out loud to God during panic attacks, and the panic left, and God's peace flooded in. The first time it took 20 minutes of praying these verses before the fear left. The second time it took about 10 minutes, and the next time it took all of one verse prayed out loud before the fear left! Praise God! Sometimes when I needed extra encouragement I'd read these verses and insert my name in them to make them more personal. I do that in the first verse as an example.

I should also mention that I didn't just read and pray these verses. I also spent time doing Bible studies by Beth Moore to learn more about Jesus and how to love Him with my mind, and I took time out of every day to spend worshiping God and sitting before Him in humility and silence. I surrendered my will to Him in everything--even panic. I turned my life over to Jesus and stopped trying to make things happen my way. I forgave people who had hurt me and I confessed my sins and asked for forgiveness every day. He began to show me how much He loved me through blessings and answered prayer. I believe any trial we go through, we need to go through it humbly with Jesus and not just by quoting or praying Scripture by rote. Keep in mind all of God's Word is life to us and a lifeline that guides us into the Presence of God.

Isaiah 41:10 "Fear thou not; for I am with thee, Joni: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness."

Isaiah 41:13 "For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.

Isaiah 43:1-4 "Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. For I am the LORD thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour....Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee...."

Joshua 1:5-7,9 "As I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. Be strong and of a good courage....Only be thou strong and very courageous..Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.".

Psalm 107:13-16 "Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses. He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder.
Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
For he hath broken the gates of brass, and cut the bars of iron in sunder."

Phillipians 4:6-7 "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."

Psalm 91: 1-2, 4-6 "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday."

Psalm 91: 14-16 "Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation."

Isaiah 54:10 "For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee."

2 Timothy 1:7 "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."

Proverbs 1:33 "But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.

1 Peter 5:7 Cast all you anxiety on Him because He cares for you."

Isaiah 26:3 "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee; because he trusteth in thee."

Romans 8:6 "For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace."

Isaiah 59:19 "When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him."

Ephesians 2:14 "For he is our peace."

Isaiah 51:12-15 "I, even I, am he that comforteth you: who art thou, that thou shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass; And forgettest the LORD thy maker, that hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; and hast feared continually every day because of the fury of the oppressor....But I am the LORD thy God, that divided the sea, whose waves roared: The LORD of hosts is his name.

Zephaniah 3:17 "The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing."

Ephesians 6:10-11 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Proverbs 2:7-8 He holds victory in store for the upright, He is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for He guards the course of the just and protects the way of His faithful ones. (New International Version)

Hebrews 13:5-6 God has said, "Never will I leave you. Never will I forsake you." So we say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid." (New International Version)

2 Peter 1:3-4 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness. Through these He has given us His very great and precious promises.... (New International Version)

Isaiah 30:18 Yet the LORD longs to be gracious to you; He rises to show you compassion. For the LORD is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for Him. (New International Version)

Psalm 34:4: "I prayed to the LORD, and he answered me, freeing me from all my fears." (New International Version)

I just found this one and decided to add it--

Romans 16:20: "And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen."

From the bottom of my heart, thank you, Joni. I woke up anxious, and your page was the first place I went this morning, read them out loud and had some good prayer time before going in for a CT scan. I've been having a peaceful day so far, and thank my Savior for this! I'm going to church tonight for a new women study, Lioness Arising. hoping to start making some new friends, and get to know Jesus better. Betty

Rejoicing with you, Betty. And I know God is singing songs of deliverance over you. He counts our acts of faith as righteousness (see Romans 4)! Praying for good results from your CT scan.

Thank you so much for your blog! Your story is an answer to prayer! My mom is back in a geriatric mental health facility as she struggles with depression and anxiety (she has been diagnosed with geriatric bipolar). I believe that although she gets some rest at this facility, as a believer she will only find true rest through God's word. I have copied your story and Bible verses and have shared that with her, as well as the link to your blog. Praying that she will take to heart your story and will trust in God's word for the healing and rest she so craves. Again, thank you!!

I agree with you. God's Word tells us, "My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from Him. He alone is my rock and my salvation. He is my fortress; I will never be shaken." Ps. 82:1-2 Praying your mother finds her hope and her rest in Him.

Hi Joni-
I just found this post in a time of need. I have been feelin so anxious (I feel like my brain never stops) and sad lately. I'm always having racing thoughts and I am really in need of some peace from God right now. Thank you so much.

Hi, Anonymous! :) I have been where you are. I know from experience that when I take the time to really meditate on a verse of Scripture, like the ones I've posted, it helps my mind to slow down and realize that God is in control and that I can trust Him. It's not all up to me. He is my Source of strength and help. Ps. 121 and Ps. 91 are good psalms to read to battle insecurity and anxiety.

I have been struggling with health anxiety since January of this year (I've suffered from anxiety off & on since I was a child). I am the mother of 4 & the wife a Marine. I turned 31 this year, and this disease has really had me down. I have always struggled with my faith, as well. I mean, I believe in God...but I've always found it difficult to get close to him. No matter how much, or how hard I pray, I always feel like I'm not doing it right. I'm taking medication, and it has helped somewhat, but I know that HE is where it's at...that HE is THE HEALER. I am going to print these verses and carry them with me...and PRAY, PRAY, PRAY. Thank you for sharing your amazing story. You are an inspiration to me.

Jesus is your Great Shepherd. And it is your Father's pleasure to give you the kingdom. God's Word has so much hope and Scripture that speaks to us of a loving Father who forgives much when we confess our sins and receive Jesus Christ as our Saviour. Jesus was given all authority and it is through Him and His love for us that we are saved, not only for eternal life, but saved from our fears because He is always with us. It's remembering that we have the Holy Spirit in us to counsel us and help us and guide us that gives me confidence. By myself, I'm just a scared little girl.

I can certainly relate! Just today I reviewed several verses in my 3x5 spiral. Isaiah 54:10 spoke to my heart especially today. We have God's "unfailing love" and His "covenant of peace". His love for us is unconditional. Praise His Name!!!

Hi, Anonymous,
I'm so sorry you're going through a tough time. God is able to help you and comfort you in times like these. Keep believing God as you meditate on His Word. Be sure and talk to Him, too, and tell Him all you're going through. He cares for you and about you.

Hi, gigi. God loves you so much. He will bless you as you seek Him. If you need to recommit your life to Christ you can go to this website: to remember all that Jesus has done for you and how gracious and compassionate our God is for sending us His Son to take our punishment so that we could have restored fellowship with God and eternal life. God is so good. "His compassions never fail; they are new every morning.Great is His faithfulness." (Lamentations 3)

this was such a blessing to me. For almost 3 years I have been suffering with anxiety over a particular situation in my life, but after reading this, God revealed a wonderful truth to me that I believe has changed the trajectory of my life. Thank you for posting this. God bless you.

Praise God for His revelation to you! I pray He will continue to reveal Himself as you allow God to do His wonderful work in you, through His Spirit who lives in you. Abiding in the love of Jesus and allowing His love and Word to abide in us is where it's at. :)

Thanks Jodi. I have been oppressed and persecuted lately by influential people and I have been losing sleep and appetite (I lost 1.5kg in just a week). I realised this might be God's way of knocking into my heart to renew my faith in Him. I know these people will not stop bothering me and making my life miserable. They have all the money and power and they are so arrogant they are invincible. I am nobody, unemployed, no means to fight back. Only my God can save me from this depressing time of my life.

More powers and keep inspiring people.

Hi, Anonymous,
You can surrender this season of your life to God and trust Him to vindicate you. Lean and rely on Him. You are precious to Jesus. He died so that you could be free. I've been through a season of oppression and I can tell you that keeping myself humble, confessing my sins to Christ and asking Him for forgiveness of my sins, thanking Him and believing that my sins were forgiven and that I could trust my life to Him enabled me to endure. I started over with Jesus, asking Him to move into my heart and take over my life, and I stopped trying to control everything. Pray about everything that concerns you and trust in His wisdom and sovereignty. Ask Him to show you His provision and love for you. :)

Thank you for this post. I was taking a allergy medication and it gave me a panic attack. After that I have trouble sleeping at night, I avoid walking in places where there are air vents. It effects everything. I've been praying and reading my bible and its helping, but your blog gave me a really god push in the right direction. GOD bless!

I suffer from Generalized Anxiety Disorder and the last few weeks have been horrendous. I'm currently suffering through another prolonged panic attack, as I did last night, and so on.
I will continue to read these verses and pray for God's mercy.
Thank you for this article.

Joni said...

Hi, Logan,
I've been there. I find that purposefully turning my mind to these verses, meditating on each one and praying each one back to God helps me like nothing else can. These verses prove that God loves us and is with us, even during anxiety, and that He will sustain us. Believe God and what He tells us in each verse. He is our Refuge, our Helper, and our very great Reward. He loves you and wants to help you. He created you and cares for you. Try to rest in that and in these verses.
