Wonderful Words of LIfe

“Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing, 15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, 16 holding fast to the word of life.” (Phil. 2:12-16, ESV)

Usually I don’t post anything until after my prayer time with God, but He has done something wonderful this morning, and I think I’m supposed to share it. I usually read from my Be Still devotional (and I probably will after I post this), but this morning my eyes fell on one of my Scripture index cards on my nightstand, and the words went straight to my heart with an urgency to post them. Since I constantly fight my impulsivity, I thought I’d wait and sing a hymn first and have my own devotional time, and then if the urgency to post was still there, I’d do it. Well….I opened my hymnal at random and sang the first one my eyes fell on—Wonderful Words of Life.

How appropriate! Especially since Paul spoke of “holding fast to the word of life.” So someone out there needs to read these words and the words of this hymn. Don’t know who you are, but I hope you’ll rejoice with me that we have a loving God who woos us to Himself through “wonderful words” so that we’ll live as beloved children of God and not as children of the world. If we’ll give Him all of ourselves—holding nothing back but trusting Him to work in every situation as we focus on loving Him and fulfilling His calling on our lives—if we’ll hold fast to Him and to His Word, our lives will shine like stars, drawing those in darkness into the light of His love and salvation.

Sing them over again to me,

        wonderful words of life;

        let me more of their beauty see,

        wonderful words of life;

        words of life and beauty

        teach me faith and duty.

Refrain:

        Beautiful words, wonderful words,

        wonderful words of life.

        Beautiful words, wonderful words,

        wonderful words of life.

2.      Christ, the blessed one, gives to all

        wonderful words of life;

        sinner, list to the loving call,

        wonderful words of life;

        all so freely given,

        wooing us to heaven.

        (Refrain)

3.      Sweetly echo the gospel call,

        wonderful words of life;

        offer pardon and peace to all,

        wonderful words of life;

        Jesus, only Savior,

        sanctify forever.

        (Refrain)
